The Brightwater Vineyard is situated 15km from the coast and is sheltered from the south by the Richmond Ranges. The “soil” is a combination of rocks and boulders which is very hard on the farm equipment but vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun - and for ripening the grapes.
The unirrigated Redwood Valley Vineyard is situated on a gently sloping, north facing clay site; the vines range in age from 9 to 26 years. Vertical shoot positioning helps to expose the berries to sunlight, thus getting maximum intensity and optimal ripeness.
Gewürztraminer is an early ripening variety with an aromatic, fragrant bouquet. It is naturally a low yielding vine which can produce wonderful concentration and flavour. After picking, the grapes had a period of skin contact before gentle pressing. The juice was cold settled for 24 hours before being racked and inoculated for fermentation. Cool temperatures were maintained throughout fermentation before stopping the fermentation prematurely to retain a little natural sugar. The wine was blended, stabilised and bottled in July 2011.
The 2011 fruit was harvested is good condition, a week earlier than typical. This meant we picked lovely clean fruit with beautiful ripeness well before the Autumn rains which came much later in the season.
The nose lifts from the glass with striking aromas of rose petals, orchard blossoms and spring bulbs. The wine has good entry to the palate with succulent Turkish Delight and a twist of fresh ginger flavours linger long after the wine has gone.
