The majority of the fruit selected for our first vintage of the Lighter Alcohol* Old Coach Road Sauvignon Blanc is from our relatively new and promising Queen Victoria Vineyard, situated on stony, free draining soils in the heart of the Motueka fruit growing region. Our Queen Victoria Vineyard block has five year old vines on very stony free draining soils and produces bright, exuberant fruit characters.
In the vineyard, leaves were removed from around the fruiting zone to allow light penetration and air movement around the ripening bunches. Parcels of fruit were picked when flavours and acids were nicely in balance, giving fruit with intensely varietal flavours and a fresh, lasting acidity, but at a lower initial natural grape sweetness.
The Old Coach Road Lighter Alcohol Sauvignon Blanc 2014 is the first lighter alcohol wine we have produced. We are delighted with the outcome! The nose has pure varietal notes of nettle and hops followed by crisp entry to the palate. Layers of fruit and an off dry finish balance the fresh acidity on the palate.
*This Sauvignon Blanc is lighter in alcohol compared to Old Coach Road Sauvignon Blanc 2014.
"Love them or loathe them, lighter alcohol wines are here to stay and this 9 percent alcohol sauvignon blanc comes from a top winery (Nelson's Seifried Estate) and a great vintage, which makes it flavour-packed as well as top value."
