The Seifried Winemakers Collection Sweet Agnes Riesling 2015 has taken out the title of Champion Sweet Wine at this year’s prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards held in Nelson.
Named in honour of Agnes Seifried, 'Sweet Agnes’ has been awarded a staggering 14 trophies and 36 gold medals since its first vintage release in 2006.
Winemaker Heidi Seifried-Houghton who has been lead winemaker of this wine for the past nine years says, “The 2015 Sweet Agnes celebrates the last fruit of the season coming in off the vine. Every phase of this wines life involved a team of people ensuring the very best fruit arrived at the winery ready for the final stage of its transition from juice into wine. This acknowledgement is a testament to the entire Seifried team, from vineyard to winery”.
The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition recognising excellence in New Zealand winemaking. This year over 1,400 wines were judged by a panel of local and international judges.

"Heidi Seifried-Houghton, of Seifried Estate, started her professional career as a dentist. She now shares her time between being a dentist in Motueka one day a week and working as a winemaker for the family business Tuesday to Friday, all while juggling three small children under the age of five as well!"
The Berliner Wein Trophy debuted in 1994 and has attracted entries from around the world, however this was the first year that family-run Seifried Estate winery has entered. Along with their three Estate grown Sauvignon Blanc entries: Aotea by Seifried Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Seifried Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2015, and Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon 2015, the winery’s flagship dessert wine Seifried Winemakers Collection Nelson Sweet Agnes Riesling 2015 also received Gold.
Winemaker, Chris Seifried, says “in 2014, each of these wines won gold medals at various wine competitions around the world, so it is really encouraging to see our 2015 vintages are following on this success. To receive recognition across the three tiers of Sauvignon Blanc reinforces our belief that although a small grape growing region, Nelson’s climate and the talent for crafting world class wine is clear. We are so proud to be recognised for the hard work our very focused team has contributed to these wines. ”

"Anyone who knows Hermann and Agnes Seifried will know of their huge capacity for work and this work ethic has been passed on to their children, Heidi, Chris and Anna. Hermann and Agnes can rightly be proud of what they have created and that their family will continue that legacy."

"Riesling's natural affinity with New Zealand's cool climate, its outstanding consistency in style - particularly in the South Island and the Wairarapa - and its incredible ability to age and still taste fresh... what more could anyone with for in a white wine?"
Wild Tomato Magazine - September 2013
"Vineyard pioneers Hermann and Agnes Seifried proved the doubters wrong. The company turns 40 with a strong family blend to its product."

Seifried Nelson Grüner Veltliner 2011: "It’s a lovely youthful wine showing delicate aromas of floral, citrus and white peach. The palate is beautifully ripe with bright acidity and a lingering finish. More expressive than most Grüners, this should evolve nicely over the next few years. Grüner Veltliner is a grape from Austria, and has the generosity of Chardonnay and the fragrance of Pinot Gris/Viognier, with a Riesling-like freshness, so it’s a difficult grape to describe but it makes a pretty tasty wine.
Seifried also make other delightful varities: Wurzer, a fragrant white wine with juicy flavours, and Zweigelt, an appealing medium-bodied red with a pleasant dry finish, proving that they are much more than makers of outstanding mainstream wines."

"As a very new winegrowing country, New Zealand faces the acute issue of succession in winemaking businesses. The ‘old world' with its history and sense of tradition living on the land for generations has not experienced this to the same degree, though the last five decades with a large proportion of populations shifting to urban centres has seen a less keen uptake of family agricultural operations. We don't have the tie to the land here, and many vineyard and wineries don't have anyone to continue the business..."
by John Hawkesby, NZ Herald - 10 September 2011
"Nelson, as a winegrowing region, does not really hang its hat on any one varietal so has a reputation for a wide range of styles unlike, say, Marlborough, Central Otago or Hawkes Bay. It also owes a huge debt to the gentle giant from Austria."
2011 Seifried Nelson Pinot Gris: "In a sea of mediocre pinot gris this is not only well-priced but rich, smooth and deeply satisfying. Intense apricot and almond characters with splashes of spice and herbs. A lovely wine with spring salads and vegetables.”
2010 Seifried Nelson Pinot Noir: “Well-priced, easy earl-drinking and highly quaffable with soft cheery and strawberry characters and a dash of warm spicy oak. A super value summer sipper.”
