The Brightwater vines are grown in an extremely stony area of the vineyard, where water and nutrient levels are low. This helps us to restrict the plants vigour and to crop at low levels. To further enhance the aromatics we removed leaves to allow light penetration and air movement around the fruiting zone.
Our Brightwater Vineyard is situated 15km from the coast and is sheltered from the south by the Richmond ranges. The “soil” is a combination of rocks and boulders, which is very hard on the farm equipment, but vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun and for ripening the Pinot Noir grapes.
The fruit in our 2015 Seifried Pinot Noir comes from our Brightwater vineyard where our Pinot Noir vines are now approaching their twenties and showing great maturity and depth of flavour in the fruit. The parcels of grapes were picked incrementally in April 2015 at the peak of flavour and phenolic ripeness. The de-stemmed fruit had a four day cold maceration period before individual parcels were inoculated for fermentation. Throughout fermentation plunging occurred twice daily and was tapered off to once daily during the six day post-fermentation maceration. The young wine was drained to new, one and two year old French barriques for malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing. The wine was stabilised and bottled late June 2016.
2015 was a remarkable year in Nelson, particularly for red grape varietals. Crops were significantly down on long term averages and this led to very concentrated fruit from exceptionally low yielding vines.
The 2015 Seifried Pinot Noir is intensely varietal with rich ripe berry fruits on the nose. The palate has generous brooding phenolics wrapping around a deep fruit core. Warm spicy oak tannins complete the wine and leave a long finish on the palate.
“Youthful, fruity and vibrant bouquet with floral, red berry fruit, red apple skin and minerality;
oak scents of some new oak with spices and vanilla, moderate complexity overall. On the palate - fruity and tense with a dry finish, flavours of cherries, berries with plum; medium oak, plenty of acidity and a mild savoury layer all add up to a very nice wine indeed.”
