The majority of the 2016 Seifried Pinot Gris comes from our newly established Clover Road vineyard which is located just a stones throw from our Brightwater vineyard. A small portion of the blend also comes from our Redwood Valley vineyard. The Clover Road vineyard is exceptionally stony free draining soils, which is very hard on the farm equipment. The large stones however are vital for holding the warmth of the Nelson sun and for ripening the grapes. Lively fruit characters are evident in the grapes harvested from these blocks.
The unirrigated Redwood Valley vineyard is situated on a gently sloping, north facing
clay site which optimises the heat of the sun. These Pinot Gris vines have root systems
going deep into the clay which have been established over the past three decades.
Two parcels of Pinot Gris went into this blend. Pinot Gris was harvested from vineyard blocks comprising differing soils, micro-climates, and clones, as well as different aged vines. The parcels were harvested and fermented separately prior to blending at a much later stage. The resulting wine has a broad palate and is full flavoured, bringing a unique and complex spectrum of characters to the finished wine.
The 2016 Seifried Pinot Gris is lush and flavoursome. The nose has pear, fresh peach and soft spice. The palate is broad with layers of fruit and gently textured phenolics which linger on the finish.
"Youthful, fresh and elegantly fragrant, the bouquet shows white stone fruit, poached pear, orange peel and floral characters."
